The Nipah virus infection is a “zoonotic illness” transmitted from animals like pigs and fruit bats to humans, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The WHO has described the virus as a priority pathogen because of its potential to trigger an epidemic.
Meanwhile Health authorities in the Indian state of Kerala have issued an alert following the death of a 14-year-old boy from the Nipah virus.
As per the state’s health minister, an additional 60 individuals have been identified as being at high risk of contracting the disease.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George mentioned that the boy hailed from the town of Pandikkad, and those who had contact with him have been isolated and tested.
Residents in the vicinity have been advised to take precautions like wearing masks in public places and avoiding visits to hospitalised individuals.
