US President Joe Biden stated on Thursday that he will not pardon his son Hunter or reduce any sentence after Hunter’s conviction for lying about his drug addiction while purchasing a handgun.
In his words;
“No,” Biden replied when reporters at a G7 summit press conference in Italy asked if he would commute any sentence that 54-year-old Hunter faces.
“I’m extremely proud of my son Hunter. He has overcome an addiction, he’s one of the brightest, most decent men I know,” Biden said.
“I said I’d abide by the jury decision. I will do that. I will not pardon him,” he said.
In a historic legal case, Hunter Biden, the son of a sitting US president, was found guilty by a jury on three felony counts related to his 2018 handgun purchase while battling addiction. Despite the possibility of a 25-year prison sentence, as a first-time offender, actual jail time is unlikely. The sentencing date has not been set but is anticipated to occur in the coming months.
Hunter Biden expressed his love for his surviving son following the verdict, emphasizing his respect for the jury’s decision. His remarks in Italy marked his initial public response to the outcome, following a trip to Wilmington, Delaware, where he was warmly greeted by his father, President Biden, prior to their departure in a motorcade.
This development unfolded amidst President Biden’s challenging re-election campaign against Donald Trump, who recently became the first former US president to be convicted as a felon.
Trump was convicted by a New York jury for violating election law by falsely declaring hush money payments to a porn star.
