Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress, Ms Onyeka Onwenu has passed away.
According to reports, the iconic singer died on Tuesday night after performing at an event in Banana Island, Lagos. She was 72 years old.
Onwenu was reported to have collapsed after her performance at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, the owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
She was later pronounced dead at a hospital in Victoria Island, as reported by The Guardian Newspaper. Her family has not yet confirmed her passing.
In addition to her artistic career, Onyeka Onwenu also had a career in politics. She held the position of chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and later became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.
Onyeka Onwenu was born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria. She started her music career in the 1980s and released her first album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981. Over the years, she has released several albums and singles, including the popular song “One Love.”
Onwenu has also appeared in numerous Nollywood films and has received multiple awards for her contributions to music and film. She is acknowledged as one of the trailblazers of Nigerian music.
Aside from her entertainment pursuits, Onwenu has been actively involved in politics. She was appointed as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013 and later assumed the role of Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016.
Onwenu has been honoured for her contributions to Nigerian society, receiving the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011. She has also been recognised as one of the most influential women in Nigeria by various organisations.
