A 30-year-old female prison officer, Linda De Sousa Abreu, appeared in court after being caught engaging in sexual activity with an inmate at Wandsworth prison.
She was charged following the circulation of a video of the incident online.
She appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court dressed in all grey. She only spoke to confirm her name, address, and date of birth before covering her face and carrying a large suitcase as she exited the court.
The Metropolitan Police initiated an immediate investigation on Friday following the discovery of a video allegedly filmed inside HMP Wandsworth in south London between June 26 and 28.
Ms. De Sousa Abreu was arrested at Heathrow Airport as she was about to board a flight to Madrid, despite having informed the prison of her travel intentions, according to the court.
Gayathri Yogarajah defended Ms De Sousa Abreu by stating that she had informed HMP Wandsworth about her travel plans, which were then relayed to Scotland Yard. As a result, the 30-year-old was given conditional bail and is scheduled to attend a plea and case management hearing on July 29 at Isleworth Crown Court.
She is required to stay at the southwest London address specified by the court.
Her Portuguese passport must be kept by the police, and she is not allowed to try to get it back.
She is prohibited from applying for or having any international travel documents.
She must surrender her Portuguese identity card that she could use for travel.
Ms. Da Sousa Abreu is prohibited from entering any UK port and is required to undergo electronic monitoring from 9am to 7pm.
A spokesperson from the Prison Service stated, “Staff corruption is not acceptable, and the ex-prison officer shown in the video has been reported to the police. Further comments will be withheld pending the investigation.”
