A tragic gas explosion has claimed the lives of a couple, identified as Chioma and George, in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State.
The spokesperson for the Ebonyi State Police Command, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident to journalists on Thursday, 12 September 2024.
The couple had recently moved into their new residence when the explosion occurred. Initial reports speculated that the blast might have been caused by dynamite or an inverter battery explosion. However, it was later confirmed to be a gas explosion.
Chioma passed away five days after the explosion, while her husband, George, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, 11 September 2024, while receiving treatment in hospital. The incident has left the community in shock and mourning, highlighting the dangers associated with gas explosions in residential areas.
