TikTok and UMG have agreed to restore the record label’s catalog on the social media platform.
Universal Music Group and TikTok have finally reached an agreement after months of deadlock, allowing UMG’s music to make a comeback on the app.
In news revealed on May 2, 2024, it was reported that TikTok will increase remuneration to UMG’s artists and songwriters, offer more marketing tools, and address the rising use of AI.
UMG previously removed its catalog from TikTok due to disputes over low royalty payments, unregulated AI use, and concerns about mental health and bullying.
TikTok countered UMG’s claims by stating the record label prioritized its interests over its artists. The platform refused to be pressured into paying more than it deemed appropriate.
The deal between UMG and TikTok will be a welcome development for artists under UMG’s subsidiaries, allowing them to once again leverage TikTok’s extensive promotional advantages. Fans will also benefit by engaging with their beloved UMG-signed artists.
Although UMG and TikTok have settled their disagreements, the situation contrasts with TikTok’s ongoing dispute with the United States. The U.S. government has mandated the Chinese-owned company to divest its U.S. operations or confront sanctions.
