Martin Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan on social media, has been released from police custody after more than two weeks.
Initially arrested on May 22, 2024, and arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja, he faced allegations of cyberstalking and bullying.
• Otse, a prominent social media critic with a large following, was greeted by supporters in a viral video upon his release.
• The end of his confinement followed his arraignment, where he pleaded not guilty to five counts of cyberstalking involving the Nigeria Police Force, Iyabo Ojo, and Tonto Dike.
• The case garnered significant attention for its implications on free speech and online conduct.
• Otse’s lawyer applied for bail, leading to an adjournment of the hearing to May 29, as the prosecution team requested more time to respond.
• Despite the prosecution’s push for prison custody, Otse’s defense team succeeded in securing his remand at the National Cybercrime Centre under police supervision.
