The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns about fake diabetes drugs circulating since 2022 globally.
The health organization specifically highlighted issues with fake drugs in the UK, the US, and Brazil since October 2023.
The problem revolves around Ozempic, a drug containing semaglutide approved in the EU for type 2 diabetes treatment.
The counterfeit version closely resembles the genuine drug and is increasingly used for weight loss due to its appetite-suppressing properties.
However, these fake medications may lack the correct dosage of active ingredients, posing risks of uncontrolled blood sugar levels in diabetic patients, as per the WHO.
The counterfeit drugs could also contain harmful substances, according to the WHO.
The WHO advised healthcare professionals, pharmacists, regulatory bodies, and the public to remain vigilant.
It recommended purchasing medications only with a prescription from physical pharmacies, not online.
Patients were urged to ensure that insulin pen dosage markings are clear, the label is accurate, and the packaging does not contain any errors.
