Wizkid declares ‘Morayo’ as a tribute album to his late mother

In an interview with Esquire, the artist behind the hit ‘Bad To Me’ expressed that the album serves as a tribute to his late mother, Jane Dolapo Balogun. Sadly, he lost his mother in August 2023, and she was laid to rest in October of the same year.

“It pays the utmost respect to my mother. I’ve named it my mum’s name,” he said.

The singer expressed his wish to showcase African and Yoruba cultures through his music, aiming to raise awareness globally about his heritage.

“It’s very important for people to know where the source of my magic comes from. I’m African, I’m Nigerian; that’s my blood, that’s my DNA,” he said.

“So, it’s important for me to push Yoruba out there. Let people know about my culture. I like to know about everyone else’s culture, their way of life, and this is mine.”

Wizkid, whose real name is Ayodeji Balogun, rose to fame in 2011 with the launch of his debut album ‘Superstar’.
He has since released four more albums: ‘Ayo (Joy)’ in 2014, ‘Sound From The Other Side’ in 2017, ‘Made In Lagos’ in 2020, and ‘More Love, Less Ego’ in 2022.
The release date for his upcoming sixth album ‘Morayo’ has not been announced yet.

At 33 years old, he is recognized as one of Nigeria’s leading contemporary artists.
